Installing A New Water Tank Yourself
This article is brought to you by Plumber Oakland County, A Website Dedicated to Helping Oakland County, MI Residents with Their Plumbing Problems.
Trust me I know how you felt when you went down stairs to get ready for that all important party you were having this weekend and their you saw it. There was a huge puddle of water staring you right in the face and it was all around your water heater. This is an oblivious sign you are going to have to get a new water heater. Even though a new water heater installation is going to cost you some money you do have a DIY option.
If you have any practice with Do It Yourself tasks round the home installing a brand new water heater shouldn't be a problem for you. Follow along with the methods in this article and in a couple of hours or so your new water heater will be installed. You can save up to 300 or 400 dollars by installing the new heater yourself. dependent upon the area you reside in. if you aren't very DIY it is easy to still install your own water tank, however it might take somewhat longer than two or three hours but if you like a challenge and are not afraid off doing repairs on the home it is possible for you to install the heater yourself as well.
Here are some things you will need to get your water heater installed
Water Heater- Install what you're taking out if you've got a 40 gallon and need to upgrade to a 50 gallon now is the time to do it. If you do have a 50 gallon I DO NOT advise switching to anything below what you have.
A pair of.¾ Fittings - You'll need 2 ¾ couplings and maybe a few elbows. Check what particular pipe you have going to your water heater. I advise getting Shark Bite ¾ fittings because they are very easy to install with PEX, CPVC and copper piping. When you have got galvanized pipe you may need to get a conversion fitting and adapt to one of the other pipes for less difficult replacement.
You will need some basic tools and materials to get started. Here is our list.
Black Pipe Fittings - You may require one or two ½ black pipe couplings and 90's to extend or shorten the gas line connecting to the heater. I put in the gas line last. By doing this I'll see exactly what I want for gas fittings.
A pair of ¾ dielectrics. At all times switch the dielectrics when installing a brand new water heater. Always get the correct dielectrics for the piping material you might have inside your house.
T&P Valve more often than not is included with the brand new heaters.
Torch, Flux, Solder, sand paper
Channel Locks or offset pliers
Pipe Wrench
Pipe Thread solution or Teflon tape
A Garden hose.
Ok we got our materials so let's get ready to roll. First connect the hose to the bottom of the water heaters drain valve. BEFORE YOU TURN ON THE DRAIN VALVE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMWHERE FOR THE WATER TO RUN. When the water starts to drain go ahead and turn off the gas valve. This is the valve on the black pipe. Let the water run for about 1 minute or so then shut down the cold side of the water heater. This will mix up the sediment and the heater will drain more effectively. you will also want to lift up on the T&P valve; this will act as a vent for the heater and will allow it to drain faster.
Right now go throughout the house and turn on all the faucets. Make sure you leave the faucets in the on position and you've hot and cold water turned on. This can allow all of the water to drain from the heater plenty faster.
While the water is draining out of the old heater, Unbox the new water heater. First pipe dope both shafts coming out the top of the heater. Once these are doped screw on the brand new dielectrics. Next if the heater came with a T&P valve unbox it and pipe dope those threads. Screw the T&P valve to the side on the heater you will have a hole with threads on it where it goes. You may require using your pipe wrench so you can get that last turn in so the valve points down. Now you got the heater prepped and ready to go.
Once the old heater is done draining disconnect the gas pipe along at the union fitting. This is the fitting which has a hexagonal middle. When you have unscrewed the union disconnect the remainder of the pipe ONLY on the heater that you're replacing.
Now we will disconnect the water pipes. Use your channel locks to disconnect the dielectric. They will disconnect similar to the gas pipe union fittings. Cut off the old dielectrics on the copper or other piping you may have.
Once all the pipes are disconnected from your water heater and it doesn't look like there is any more water in the tank. Start to move the old water heater out of the way. Ensure you leave enough room to get the new heater in place. If you have got a small area you might have to simply remove the old water heater to generate room for the brand new water heater.
Line up the brand new water heater with all the pipes that connected the old heater. When you notice you will need to modify some water piping, leave the pipe using the cold water valve the straight pipe and reconfigure the hot side.
Connect the water piping to new heater using the shark bite fittings or whatever fittings you made the decision on. You might have to solder the brand new dielectrics to your water piping if you have got copper pipe. When soldering the dielectrics I recommend you figure out just how much pipe you require from the dielectric to your coupling and cut it to length and solder it on the ground. This will likely make for a neater solder job. You will also want to take out the washers from the dielectrics so you don't burn them.
Now you have the water pipe all hooked up. Once everything cools. For those who had to do any soldering. Replace the washers in the dielectrics and tighten them down. Turn on the main water supply. While the water heater is filling up leave the faucets on so you can bleed all the air out of the system.
Now you may know what you absolutely need for gas pipe. Hook up the gas pipe to the heater. For anyone who is lucky the gas pipe off of the old heater will line up with the new heater. If it doesn't, just reconfigure it as needed. You can buy gas piping in all ranges and sizes.
Once all the air is bleed from the system close up the faucets.
Now the water heater is filled up you must light it. Most new heaters contain a manual lighting system. A manual light system is a little clicker on the bottom of the heater. Their will also be a pilot button. You have to push in the pilot button while pushing in the clicker. Do this about 20 times or so then turn the heater to on you hear a whoosh and now the heater is lit. You are going to now have hot water in about 30 to 45 minutes determined by the size of your tank
