Best Hockey Player Of All Time - Hockey And Gretzky Complimented Each Other
Ice hockey is currently seen to be as one of the most popular games in the world. Even if your attention has not been drawn to it, you will have noticed that the popularity of the game is growing by leaps and bounds. When you think "hockey," one name that will immediately come to mind is Wayne Gretzky, for he is the best hockey player of all time.
Wayne ventured into ice hockey since his boyhood. Being a Canadian, he grew up watching Hockey Night on Canadian television. Soon he began to practice hockey in his backyard ice rink. Even as a toddler, his father, Walter, knew that someday Wayne was destined to become a famous hockey player. He started to play organized hockey at the tender age of 6. (You had to be 8 if you wanted to play hockey). By the time he was ten he was scoring high.
He is the highest scoring lead player and was named MVP (the most valuable player) nine times. He led the Edmonton Oilers, and could snatch the Stanley Cup four times in just five years. He was named "the Most Sportsmanlike Player," five times, and he got many other awards.
His prolific scoring had taken the international ice hockey scene by storm and if you go through his career, you will find that his cumulative score of 2,857 career points has never been matched.
Wayne ruled supreme in the field of hockey for nearly two decades. And along with him, hockey also rose to great heights. He was ranked first by a team of experts made up of former NHL players broadcasters and coaches.
In the final season of his playing career, he could build his grand total to 894 goals, and 1963 assists for 2857 points. All this, he achieved in 1,487 career games, making it the cherry on top of his career.
He is regarded as a sport icon the world over and has appeared on the covers of so many famous magazines. He has also been a spokesperson for all sorts of good causes. When he retired from hockey, he was invited to join "Hollywood," an offer he could not accept. He currently runs a restaurant near the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto and has created his own clothing line. He presently hosts a yearly hockey fantasy camp, also in Toronto. He is now the director of Team Canada for the Winter Olympics. He is also the managing partner of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey operations.
He is an athlete of great renown. He holds a place in history that could equal legends like Pele and Muhammad Ali, as one of the best athletes of the 20th century. He still dedicates his life to the continuous improvement of hockey. He watched hockey as a child, played hockey, grew along with hockey, and now he is doing his best for the uplift of the game and its players. Has the Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 1980s been a little overrated over time?
Back in the day, Edmonton was given the deserved plaudits for being the premier offensive juggernaut in the NHL. Featuring the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr, the Oilers made the rest of the NHL look silly in the mid 1980s. However, over two decades after the fact, have we as hockey fans overrated the dynasty? In other words, with the way the league and subsequent teams have been structured since the end of the dynasty, do we look at the 1980s Oilers with rose-tinted glasses? Let the controversey begin...
Absolutely not. Gretzky speaks for himself. I believe Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson are two of the most under rated players in recent NHL history. Grant Fuhr will not go down as one of the top 10 goaltenders of all time, however, he will go down as one of the top 10 clutch goaltenders of all time.
You mentioned 5 of the greatest players in the history of the game, not just the Oilers, and you failed to mention Mark Messier. "Like I've Been" mentioned his qualifications for the defense of a dynasty. Aside from Paul Coffey, they also featured Lee Fogolin, Randy Gregg, Kevin Lowe and others on defense. While they were not the greatest of all time, they were one of, if not the deepest of their time. Their role players included Dave Semenko, Willy Lidstrom, Charlie Huddy, Kevin McClelland, Craig McTavish and Esa Tikkanen. Based on their performances in the playoffs, most of those players would demand contracts that would max out the salary caps of most teams.

Edmonton Oilers Hockey Trivia of the 1980s
In the mid to late 1980s, from 1984-1989, the Edmonton Oilers won 4 out of 5 Stanley Cups. They were led by The Great One's Wayne Gretzky. Joining Gretzky were many other great players including Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, Kevin Lowe, Glenn Anderson, and Grant Fuhr.
The Oilers were absolutely dominant as they won the Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. Gretzky won the Art Ross award 7 straight times. He also won many Hart Trophies. He broke the record for most assists and most points in a season. He would reset the assists record 3 more times and the record for most points once more.
It was amazing to watch the Edmonton Oilers as they skated circles around their competition during their dominant years. The Oilers came very close to beating the Calgary Flames in 1986. Had they done that, they may very well have won the Cup that year too.
The Oilers lost to the Flames in a very competitive 7 game series. In fact, game 7 was decided when rookie defensemen, Steve Smith, tried to clear the puck and bounced it off Oiler's goalie, Grant Fuhr, and into the Edmonton net. That was the deciding goal in a 3-2 loss.
That's how close the Oilers came to winning 5 straight Stanly Cups. But they had to settle for 4 out of 5. And after winning their fourth Cup, major changes were about to occur.
In August of 1988, team captain Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. That would lead to the Edmonton Oilers being knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Adding insult to injury, it was Gretzky's team, the Kings, that defeated the Oilers.
However, led by Mark Messier and many young players including Adam Graves and Joe Murphy, the Oilers won the Stanly Cup in 1990. It was their fifth championship in seven years. It seemed to prove that the Oilers didn't need Gretzky to be successful, but it would be the last Stanley Cup the Oilers would win.
Eventually many other great players would leave Edmonton. Messier, along with other Oiler's greats like Graves, Kevin Lowe, Glenn Anderson, and Craig Mac Tavish, won a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994.
Gretzky joined the Rangers late in his career but would never again win another Stanley Cup. Gretzy finished his career with the 4 Stanley Cups he won with the Oilers, 10 scoring titles, and 9 Most Valuable Player Awards.
The talent the Oilers possessed during the mid and late 1980s is proven by the fact that they won 4 of 5 Stanley Cups and the fact that the players went on to achieve individual and team success past their time with the Edmonton.
